Elaboration of Novel Image Processing Algorithm for Arcing Discharges Recognition on HV Polluted Insulator Model

Category : Image Processing

Sub Category : SATELLITE IMAGE

Project Code : IMP03

Project Abstract

Insulator flashover under pollution is one of the most important problems for power transmission. Occurrence of flashover is preceded by discharges propagation. This paper is dedicated to monitor discharges activity through arcing discharges pattern recognition using a combination of efficient image processing and classification algorithms. Images are extracted from recorded videos of flashover process over a plane model insulator under various contamination levels. Then, an algorithm is proposed and tested over a large image database. This algorithm processes in four stages. First, Otsu image segmentation algorithm is initially applied on images. Next, morphological filtering by combining erosion and dilation operations is computed to eliminate unwanted noises such as light reflections on the insulator model.

EXISTING SYSTEM

PROPOSED SYSTEM

EXISTING CONCEPT:

The Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) for Leakage Current (LC) examination on high voltage insulators under pollution conditions is exposed. Based on laboratory experiments under various artificial solution natures (consisting in a mixture of distilled water with NaCl, Kaolin or Kieselguhr), LC acquisition is firstly carried out. After a careful examination, three groups of LC waveforms are constituted depending on their peak values.

PROPOSED CONCEPT:

Occurrence of flashover is preceded by discharges propagation. This paper is dedicated to monitor discharges activity through arcing discharges pattern recognition using a combination of efficient image processing and classification algorithms. Images are extracted from recorded videos of flashover process over a plane model insulator under various contamination levels. Then, an algorithm is proposed and tested over a large image database.

EXISTING  TECHNIQUE :

           WAVELET PACKET TRANSFORM (WPT)

PROPOSED ALGORITHM:

          MORPHOLOGICAL FILTERING

TECHNIQUE DEFINITION:

WPT is used to decompose LC waveforms. From this decomposition, feature extraction by energy calculation is processed.

Hence, a feature vector, composed of wavelet coefficients energies values, is used as input for three classification algorithms to distinguish between three LC groups.

ALGORITHM DEFINITION:

Binary image, obtained from Otsu segmentation may contain numerous imperfections due to image noises. Morphological image processing allows removing these imperfections.

Dilation and Erosion are the basic operations of morphological filtering, and can be combined into more complex sequences but are not invertible operations; if an image is eroded and dilated, the original image is not reobtained.

DRAWBACKS:

·         It does not have the ability to solve problems of linear and non-linear classification.

·         Massive investments will be required to meet future needs. Such investments are meaningless if efforts are not consented to assure security of such equipment.

·         All previously cited studies concerning the flashover monitoring and high voltage insulators performance were based on the acquisition of LC which costs more.

ADVANTAGES:

The advantage of the model deduced from the particular study is that, if the insulator is modelled according to our model the flashover voltage will be reduced to a greater margin.

In areas where pollution comesfrom artificial sources it is possible to persuade offenders to reduce emissions either by convincing them of the benefits for themselves or by dictating appropriate laws
