On Scanning Linear Barcodes From Out-of-Focus Blurred Images: A Spatial Domain Dynamic Template Matching Approach

Project Abstract

We present a novel linear barcode scanning system based on a dynamic template matching scheme. The proposed system works entirely in the spatial domain, and is capable of reading linear barcodes from low-resolution images containing severe OOF blur. This paper treats linear barcode scanning under the perspective of deformed binary waveform analysis and classification. A directed graphical model is designed to characterize the relationship between the blurred barcode waveform and its corresponding symbol value at any specific blur level. A dynamic programming-based inference algorithm is designed to retrieve the optimal state sequence, enabling real-time decoding on mobile devices of limited processing power.

EXISTING CONCEPT:

          Generations of barcode scanning systems ranging from earlier laser scanners to Charge-Coupled Device.

          The method of barcode scanning as a blind or partially blind deconvolution problem. Iterative procedures were used to reconstruct barcode signal from deformed and noisy data by minimizing cost functions.

PROPOSED CONCEPT:

          As linear barcode reading is the classification of deformed images to a finite set of possible values, has treated linear barcode scanning under the deformed binary waveform analysis.

          The reference waveform most similar to the observed barcode waveform is found and verified corresponding barcode value is treated as the output of the barcode scanning system.

TECHNIQUE DEFINITION:

          Template matching is a technique to find small parts of an image which match a template image using only scanlines.

TECHNIQUE DEFINITION:  

          Dynamic Template matching is a technique to find small parts of an image which match a template image using direct graphical model and observance sequence.

DRAWBACKS:

          OOF blur cannot be handled by current techniques.

          It is not feasible for real-time barcode scanning in real-world situations.

          MODIFIED Template matching scheme gives the capability to deal with ALL TYPES OF BLUR AND NOISES.

          This approach leads efficient method of barcode scanning in real-time even with high level of blur
