Achieving Flatness: Selecting the Honey words from Existing User Passwords

Category : Network Security

Sub Category : DOTNET

Project Code : ITDNS02

Project Abstract

ACHIEVING FLATNESS: SELECTING THE HONEYWORDS

FROM EXISTING USER PASSWORDS

ABSTRACT

In this paper we proposed honey words (decoy passwords) to detect attacks against hashed password databases. For each user account, the legitimate password is stored with several honey words in order to sense impersonation. If honey words are selected properly, a cyber-attacker who steals a file of hashed passwords cannot be sure if it is the real password or a honey word for any account. Moreover, entering with a honey word to login will trigger an alarm notifying the administrator about a password file breach. At the expense of increasing the storage requirement by 20 times, the authors introduce a simple and effective solution to the detection of password file disclosure events. In this study, we scrutinize the honey word system and present some remarks to highlight possible weak points. Also, we suggest an alternative approach that selects the honey words from existing user passwords in the system in order to provide realistic honey words – a perfectly flat honey word generation method – and also to reduce storage cost of the honey word scheme.

EXISTING SYSTEM

PROPOSED SYSTEM

EXISTING CONCEPT:-

Once a password file is stolen, by using the password cracking techniques it is easy to capture most of the plaintext passwords.

The tentative password indexes hamper an adversary to make a correct guess and cannot be easily sure about which index is

the correct one.

PROPOSED CONCEPT:-

Passwords must be protected by taking appropriate precautions and storing with their hash values computed through salting or some other complex mechanisms.

We focus on the latter issue and deal with fake passwords or accounts as a simple and cost-effective solution to detect compromise of passwords.

The fake password sets are stored with the real user password set to conceal the real passwords, thereby forcing an adversary to carry out a considerable amount of online work before getting the correct information.

EXISTING TECHNIQUE:-

Honey word System

PROPOSED TECHNIQUE:-

Honey pot

TECHNIQUE DEFINITION:-

The cracked password files can be detected by the system administrator if a login attempt is done with a honey word by the adversary

TECHNIQUE DEFINITION:-

Honey pot is one of the methods to identify occurrence of a password database breach.

DRAWBACKS:-

Easy to detect password.

It is not efficient and accuracy.

ADVANTAGES:-

Passwords are protective.

It is more efficient and accuracy.
